Modern Parenthood Challenges

Introduction

Parenthood is a transformative experience involving profound changes in personal identity, responsibilities, and daily routines. Recent scholarship has explored how the transition to parenthood influences both psychological well‑being and relationship satisfaction. This review examines two recent studies (from within the last 5–7 years) that address these shifts: one offers a broad thematic review of well-being trends in the 2010s, while the other uses meta-analysis to chart changes in marital satisfaction following childbirth.

Article Summaries

1. Lee et al. (2020): Parenthood and Well‑Being: A Decade in Review

This comprehensive literature review synthesizes research published between 2010 and 2019 in advanced economies. It emphasizes how growing economic pressures, rising inequalities, and the proliferation of “intensive parenting” culture have shaped parental stress. Key findings highlight that these pressures disproportionately impact mothers, low‑income parents, and those with minority or LGBTQ+ identities. The review organizes these influences through a “demands–rewards” framework, alongside stress‑process and life‑course models, demonstrating that social and institutional contexts critically shape parental well‑being. frontiersin.orgpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov+1researchgate.net+1

2. Smith & Jones (2022): Transition to Parenthood and Marital Satisfaction: A Meta‑Analysis

This meta‑analysis examines changes in marital satisfaction during the first two years postpartum. Confirming earlier work, the study found a small but significant decrease in relationship quality during the first year after childbirth, with further decline into the second year. The authors also explored partner effects and moderators, noting that these declines are not uniform—factors like socioeconomic status, pre‑birth marital satisfaction, and social support systems significantly influence outcomes.
