Part 2, Section 1: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Academic integrity and writing are fundamentally linked, as scholarly writing demands honesty, originality, and proper citation of sources. Maintaining academic integrity ensures that students produce authentic work and credit others appropriately, which in turn strengthens their credibility and academic reputation. When paraphrasing, citing sources correctly, and avoiding plagiarism through tools such as Grammarly and Turnitin, students practice ethical writing that reflects true comprehension and respect for intellectual property (Gallagher, 2019). Turnitin helps detect unoriginal content and ensures paraphrased ideas are cited, while Grammarly assists in improving clarity and reducing unintentional errors that may lead to misrepresentation of others’ ideas.

Similarly, professional practices in nursing rely heavily on scholarly ethics. Nurses must rely on evidence-based research to inform patient care, and thus must uphold the same standards of integrity when applying or sharing knowledge. Scholarly ethics guide professionals in respecting authorship, conducting unbiased research, and contributing to the scientific community ethically (Thomas et al., 2021). Violations in scholarly ethics in nursing can compromise patient safety and damage public trust. Therefore, both academic and professional integrity serve as essential pillars in shaping responsible, trustworthy nurse leaders.
