For this assignment, you will develop a research-based communication presentation. You will research information regarding ONE of the several communication contexts of communication scholars’ study pulled from our text, and then deliver a  3-5  minute speech of explanation or description about it. For example, you could choose the Sapir Whorf Hypothesis, explain it and give examples or you could choose the nonverbal cues of facial expressions, SADFISH, and how blind babies innately use these cues.   You will use your research to create an engaging presentation where you teach the demonstrated usefulness of the communication research you’ve done.

There are four parts to this assignment to complete:

1. AUDIENCE ANALYSIS AND TOPIC SELECTION:
Think of areas of interest to you that would be fun to explore and learn more about and that would simultaneously interest your audience and
increase their knowledge.

2. RESEARCH
As you begin to plan your informative speech, it is important that you go beyond personal experience to
increase the credibility of your speech. Your research should pass the CRAAP test and include credible sources such
as academic journals, periodicals, books, newspapers, interviews, letters, podcasts and other media, and/or
government documents.
You must formally cite in your outline and verbally cite during the delivery of your speech at least 3 sources.

At least one of these sources must be something other than a general website. Wikipedia, encyclopedias,
dictionaries, and similar general reference materials may be useful during your research but do not qualify as
appropriate sources. You are to turn in a typed work cited or references page with your full-sentence outline
that follows the guidelines of either the MLA or APA style manuals. For assistance with MLA and APA format,
refer to the Purdue Online Writing Lab: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.htmlLinks to an external site.

3. FULL-SENTENCE PREPARATION OUTLINE
Create a typed full-sentence outline that includes all necessary parts of a speech and your works
cited/references at the end (see examples in module). You will submit the outline with accompanying works cited/references for the Informative Speech assignment on Canvas.

4. KEY-WORD PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Your informative speech is to be delivered in an extemporaneous manner. You may use a keyword presentation
outline (not complete sentences) written on notecards when you deliver your speech. I prefer to highlight my full-sentence speech to provide cues. You will NOT READ.

For my informative speech, I chose to focus on fast fashion and its environmental impact. My specific purpose is: At the end of my speech, my audience will understand how fast fashion harms the environment and why sustainable alternatives matter. I will use three main sources: a New York Times article on fast fashion’s effects, a report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation about sustainable solutions, and a study from Nature Reviews Earth & Environment on pollution caused by the fashion industry.
